In the Game Design 1 class, we learned many tools and gained a lot of knowledge about games. While we started with analog and board games, we also delved into the mechanics, philosophy, and game-making processes for different kinds of games.
Going through this process allowed me to understand games from a different perspective, this time as a creator, while also being an enthusiastic player. I resonate with games that have strong narratives and the ability to engage players for a longer period of time. I also found myself critiquing some good tabletop RPGs with strong mechanics. I had the most fun making the narrative game and the serious game for this class. I realized that narrative has the power to capture players' attention and can develop feelings like empathy through its choices and mechanics. Additionally, I believe that serious games, like those made for educational purposes, have great potential to impart knowledge. For instance, I discovered so much more about the workings of hospitals and healthcare services while researching for my educational game. I can only imagine how informative and fun it could be for the players.
I hope that I can continue with these realizations and learnings about games and build on them so that I can be a better creator and an engaging player.
